Preceding PLATO’s Annual Meeting gather at 1 pm for an easy lakeside trail walk where ancient Native Americans camped, fished, hunted and grew rice continuously for 10,000 years.  Lake Farm Park also hosts the Lussier Family Heritage Center so you will be in the right place at the right time to refresh yourselves and join friends at the 3-6pm Annual Meeting.

What you can expect:

  • Meet at Shelter #1 at 4330 Libby Road.
  •  A two mile loop walk along the shore of Lake Wabesa will be led by Capital Springs naturalist, Clare Carlson, who will point out natural features, tell us a bit about history and point out the sites of 1970s archaeological digs which uncovered evidence of paleo-Indian campsites.
  • A shorter one mile walk along the shoreline for those who prefer will be led by Bill Lunney who has decades of background in the founding of Lake Farm Park and the whole Capital Springs Recreation Area. Bill may mix creation stories of this large, complex park with information about the paleo-Indian life in this beautiful setting.
Note:
The walks will end in time for you to join the 2017 Annual Meeting in the Luzzier Center, located on parkland about 1/2 mile away from the Shelter 1 Parking lot.  Driving and parking instruction will be provided at the end of the walk.

Accessibility:
  • The short loop will be a slow paced 1 mile walk and talk as we walk along grass and wood chip paths. Weather depending, this walk may be well suited for wheelchair and walker use.
  • The longer walk will be a medium paced 1/12 to 2 mile walk as we learn about the peoples of the past.  This walk will be suited for wheelchair and walker use until we get to the foot of the hill at the farthest  part of the walk.  It will be fairly easy to walk around the hill while you wait for the rest of the walkers to return to the path.
Microphone:
Our guides will have sound amplifiers along on the walks to assist in delivering their messages as clearly as possible.
