Thomas Jennings (1791–1859) was the first African American to receive a U.S. Patent. He was working as a tailor and businessman in New York City when he invented a process for dry-cleaning delicate clothing known as "dry-scouring." Jennings applied for a patent in 1820 and it was approved the following year. Learn more about Thomas Jennings here.
